The idea is simple, define a goal, build a plan and create a sustainable habit to achieve the goal.
It doesn’t have to be anything life-changing.
Some of the simplest goals in my life brought me the biggest rewards.
The Power of a Tiny Goal
In 2003 I decided to leave my work in PR and start my own outdoor coaching firm. Right away, one of the biggest challenge for my new venture was to secure access to tribal land.
I already wrote about my decision to set a simple goal: sit down and have tea with tribal elders every other evening.
This is how difficult it was: write down in my agenda an appointment to sit down and drink tea with tribal leaders. Easy right?
The result went far beyond anything I ever expected. I envisioned gaining rights to operate on their land.
Over the next few months this goal over-delivered
The power of a simple goal is undeniable to me. I just have to look back at how many doors it opened to me within a few months.
- A meeting which grew into a friendship and business partnership with a member of the royal family.
- The opportunity to work with a non-profit and give back to the local community
- Focusing on my values and finding meaning by fund-raising and setting-up the first mountain rescue unit in the region.

I am signed up!See you at the challenge!Rajka
I’m off the blocks. When I decide2do, I do. My cup of tea? Tweaking my blogsite to more effectively communicate my mission, my message and my services. Suggestions welcome! Cheers! Kaarina
I was 3/4 through an excuse why circumstances beyond my control prevent me from using the first project on my todo list as a goal when it hit me, Expat 30 launches tomorrow? I’m launching an outpost Friday.
The timing couldn’t be more perfect.
Right now, however, I’m focused on getting all the legs of this tripod extended to the same length so it will stand up on its own. For the Expat 30, I’m thinking I’ll be taking action on launching a new online community under the Gearheads United banner.
Excited.
John, I’m really looking forward to this, shouting out my goals that is. Thanks.
Thanks John. So many things to work on and so much going on. Look forward to this. For myself as well as all thos who participate in your community. Support and Encouragement are key.

@Al Smith Al, I’m just grateful that you are part of this community. You bring a real breath of fresh air to these online discussions. Did I mention I was grateful?
This is super awesome, John! You’re absolutely right, too. The littlest goal can sometimes lead to much bigger things. And it’s like, after you set the goal and go through with it, you begin to think, “Why haven’t I done this before?!” Extremely motivating and can’t wait to hear all the success stories that come from this!
@MorganBarnhart The power of these little goals is that they lead to bigger ones and before we know it, what we use to consider as ‘difficult’ or ‘too far’ becomes mundane and easy.
What is your goal for this month Morgan?
@John Falchetto My goal is to create and carry out a meetup for a client of mine. So far it’s going really well!
I really, really love that you’re doing this John. It’s exciting to watch people say goals out loud and then exceed them. It’s inspiring and motivating, as well. I’m anxious to watch how this goes in the next month.
@ginidietrich So what is your goal ? To get an use a helmet cam ?
@Al Smith Now I would love to see this, @ginidietrich on her morning training ride, helmet cam and her thoughts on business, PR, social media…and crazy drivers
You know what I experienced? Just committing myself to do something has already focused my mind and energy. Thanks for leading out this way, John!
